I’m reading this article in Game Informer called “The Red Flags of Modern Gaming” and it’s like oh man I look out for all of these, I’m glad it’s not just me. These are things you need to look out for with apps and MMO’s in particular, because if you’ve got a few of these, chances are the game isn’t going to be that fun without you spending real money on it… because they’ve designed it that way.

Your progress is time-gated
You need friends to be competitive
The game has more than one currency
The in-game shop is its own separate entity
One-use items cost real money
Help costs money (like game hints)
The game rewards you for promoting it
The game is on a Top Grossing list

Of course there are good games that would check off some on that list, but you have to weight the pros and the cons. The more of these a game has, the more likely it is to get really boring if you don’t pay for something. Oftentimes I won’t even play a game if it hits #2 or sometimes #1. Little puzzle or match games that you can only play until your “life” runs out? No thank you.
